006 THE NEW ECONOMYOPENING REMARKSCOP 22, hailed as ‘The COP of Action’ will be a test for the commitments taken last year. At the time of writing, the two key thresholds needed for the Paris Climate Change Agreement to become legal reality have now been met – a truly historic moment for people everywhere.‘Above all, entry into force bodes well for the urgent, accelerated implementation of climate action that is now needed to realize a better, more secure world and to support also the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.’ (Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary, UNFCCC).At COP22 this collective effort will need to continue to double and redouble until a sustainable future is secured. For these reasons CCTNE and its stakeholders are urging swift climate action by all countries, companies, investors and cities, regions, territories and states. The fact that more than a 1°C rise above pre-industrial has already happened and global greenhouse gas emissions have not yet peaked underlines the urgency of implementing the Paris Agreement in full. The Paris Agreement will enter into force on 4 November this year. In the words of the outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: “What once seemed unthinkable, is now unstoppable.” CCTNE pays tribute to Mr Ban’s tireless efforts to make the unthinkable happen. As ultimately... ‘History will judge societies and governments – and their institutions – not by how big they are or how well they serve the rich and the powerful, but by how effectively they respond to the needs of the poor and the helpless.’ (César Chávez)James D.
